4 super easy DIY watercolour Christmas cards

Tired of buying a new stamp set each season? Here are four super easy DIY watercolour Christmas cards that cost you next to nothing if you already have the paints. Better still, no drawing skill required! Just grab your paints and dive right in.

Loose Style Painting

Mistletoe and wreath cards.

I used my Paul Rubens watercolour, but you can use any paint you have at hand. The first two cards are done in layers. All four cards are meant to be loose, so don’t fuss too much how the paint dries on the first layer. I used the cheapest Fabriano Studio cold pressed paper which dries too quickly. It’s not my favourite paper but it will suffice for Christmas cards.

I hate the way the paint dries on this paper, but since this is done in several layers, don’t worry too much.

First, I used the bottom of a cup to trace the circle as the base of the wreath. Using values from light to dark, I layered the elements, waiting for each layer to dry before adding more.

Next, I added in the sentiment. You can hand letter or stamp, whichever is easier for you. Since I have existing Christmas stamps, I stamped the words, added Scrapbook.com’s Pops of Color in Rudolph Red on select berries, and glued it to a card base. Voila!

For the mistletoe, I added mid tones and darkest values to the base layer. Don’t worry how you layer the leaves; as long as your overall shape suggests the form of a mistletoe, it’s fine. 🙂

As with my wreath card, I also added the Pops of Color in Rudolph Red on a few berries as accents, before gluing the painting on a card base.

Salt Trees Easy Watercolour Christmas Card

By the way, the third card was a painting I have done before. It was a tutorial from Let’s Make Art called Salt Trees. It is super easy and fun to do.

I brushed off some of the salt in the final version. In addition, I accented the card with a few sequins, put a sentiment and ribbon on, and that’s it. Simple and easy!

Super Easy Watercolour Fir Trees

The last one is the easiest; it’s a group of three loose fir trees. This took less than 2 minutes to complete. If you want to buy stamps to create tree cards, don’t! You can just use a round brush and paint loose trees in minutes. Even if you mass produce, these are quick and easy to paint.

I also accented the card with Pops of Color on the trees and several sequins on the background. The ribbon (from Stampin’ Up) completes the card.
