Hey friends! Today I have a review of Fuumuui Watercolour Travel Set to share with you. I have the medium set that contains 24 paint colours and 20 sheets of watercolour paper. Without further ado, let’s dive into the review!

By the way, I only realized after I took the picture that the stainless steel cup can be clipped onto the acrylic tray without damaging the leather, so forgive the setup in this photo.
What’s In The Box?
As you can see in the picture, Fuumuui Watercolor Medium Travel Sketchbook Set contain everything you need to paint wherever you choose to paint. Here is a list of contents:

The paper, paint, dual-tipped travel brush can all be purchased separately at Fuumuui. You can purchase the whole set at Fuumuui’s own website or at Amazon in your country. At the time of writing this review, the medium set retails for CAD$72 at Fuumuui and CAD$104 at Amazon.ca. I also want to note that the sketchbook, paper and brushes cost a lot more separately than purchasing as a set, so you are better off purchasing the whole set right off the bat rather than buying each of the components separately, unless you are only refilling the paper or paint.
Review of Fuumuui Watercolour Travel Set
First off, I want to talk about the paints in the set. The selection of colours is good–you can paint most subjects with these colours. The paints rewet very easily and have good pigments. The only trouble I had is with the Payne’s Gray shade, which seems to have some kind of yellow pigment that kept surfacing after I wet it and let it sit for a bit. It could be the binder, but the shade does show up a bit yellow in paintings and in the swatch. The rest of the colours are good and I have no complaints. Even the white was a bit more opaque than I expected.
The 100% cotton paper is surprisingly very good. It has medium texture and I enjoyed painting on it more than the Hahnemuhle journal I have. It doesn’t lift so much that I cannot layer like the Lightwish paper that I have. It withstands heavier washes and also washi tapes without the paper ripping. For the record I painted on both sides and there was no bleed through. The paper also did not warp much at all.
Food Sketching/Plein Air
I never did plein air but the Fuumuui Watercolour Travel Set kind of forced me out of my comfort zone. My landscape isn’t the best so I thought I would bring the set with me and paint food at restaurants.
The paper measures 8cm x 12cm which isn’t big, so I did use a fine point pencil to sketch the finer details of the ramen. The carbon tip of the travel brush is handy though, you can use it for broader things.
I began to really enjoy doing these small paintings! They are fun to do and don’t take long. Why did I not do plein air or food sketching sooner?
Around sunset, after the rain and mixed with the smoke from the wildfires, the orange/pink haze made the sky so vivid and I painted the loon on the lake close to home. It was a bad day for air quality but the artist in me also saw the opportunity for a colourful background. I wasn’t used to plein air before so I had to sketch so quickly before the loon moved. It didn’t move much, thankfully.
Overall Fuumuui Watercolour Travel Set Review
This is the first Fuumuui product I have used and I enjoyed it a lot. I call it fun in a box. At a time when I found myself in a bit of a rut, it got me out of the house and my comfort zone.
The paints (except Payne’s Gray) are good, the paper is excellent and everything included in the box was handy. The PU leather elevates the sketchbook; it feels luxe. By the way, you can always refill the palette with your own paints once the Fuumuui paints run out in the acrylic tray.
When I started painting with watercolour four years ago, there were not as many affordable options for good art supplies, and I am thankful that you can now find good quality watercolour supplies at such good prices. If you are looking to do plein air and didn’t want to spend too much right off the bat, Fuumuui is a really good option.
