The Pencils
There are 14 pencils in this set, ranging from 4H to 8B.
First of all, H stands for hardness, so the higher the number, the harder the lead, but lighter in value. Secondly, B stands for black; the higher the number, the darker the value. Lastly, F stands for firm, with its lead between H and B. So from 4H to 8B you go from hardest and lightest to softest and darkest.
By the way, the pencils come unsharpened. I sharpened mine with my trusty Dahlee 133, which is the best manual pencil sharpener I swear by.

Swatches
Upon swatching, I felt that smooth lay down is true to claim. Moreover, the B pencils are very pigmented, whereas the H and F pencils are the right amount of firmness according to their level. Furthermore, I love that the pencils have hexagon shapes, so they don’t roll off my desk.
IU Pencil Portrait with Arrtx Sketching Pencils
For this review, I used all the Arrtx sketching pencils in the set and did a portrait of IU (Lee Ji-eun). I had no trouble getting good shading with the B pencils and putting in fine details with the H pencils. The H pencils, for example, are especially good for doing the loose strands of hair and bangs.
By the way, I used Canson XL Bristol Vellum paper which isn’t very toothy, but the pencils still worked very well on it.
Overall Review of Arrtx Sketching Pencils
Arrtx is on a roll! I have enjoyed their other art supplies and these pencils as well. These are good pencils and even better considering how affordable they are. More remarkably, the B pencils, while softer, still have a durable core that doesn’t break. I experienced no breakage even with repeated sharpening. The H pencils are firm and great for details, and the F pencil works as it claims as well.
